What is today Sacred Mission Australia was founded as the Society of the
Sacred Mission by Anglican priest Father Herbert Kelly in England in 1892.
Originally a loose-knit missionary brotherhood, the Society developed more formal structures over time and established theological colleges. In 1946 it was invited to establish a college in Australia—St Michael’s House in the Adelaide Hills in South Australia, which closed in the early 1980s.
In Australia, the Society comprises members who work together in the doing of God’s will in an atmosphere for theological reflection.
The Society of the Sacred Mission Australia is based in Adelaide and the Barossa Valley, South Australia and in Melbourne, Victoria. It is autonomous, but closely linked to the Provinces of Europe and Southern Africa.
